Winner’s Announcement/ Furniture Design for the Community


Western Washington University - Industrial Design


Six judges have reviewed and selected their favorites among 21 furniture designs. The project was part of the sophomore course, Sophomore ID studio 2, led by Associate Professor Jason Morris. The objective was to design and construct a unique furniture solution for a community non-profit organization for their current needs. The furniture will be then given to that organization as a gift.

Mount Baker Products has generously donated all of the high quality FSC hardwood plywood for the project and has also donated $6000 for scholarships for the winners.

Student choice award $300 - Ashkon Nima of Bothell, WA. for his design of the Starlight Table, a light table for exploring biology and color for the Bellingham Childcare and Education Center.​



5th place $500 – Zak Basher of Yelm, WA, for his DIY Utility bench designed for Habitat for Humanity.

4th place $700 – Tom Olson  for his projector stand designed for the WWU industrial design studio.



3rd place $1000 – Edward Hanko of Lynden, WA, for his design of a side table for the Jansen Art Center in Lynden, WA.

2nd place $1500 – Mikhaila Thornton of Bend, OR, for her Chicken Tractor, a portable chicken coop for the Common Threads Farm.



1st place $2000 – Dan Taylor of Edmonds, WA, for his Topo Table, a play table with topographical features for the Loving Space Preschool, Bellingham.



Judges:
Entries were judged on concept, creativity, functionality, structure, craftsmanship and form. They were judged by Lisa Van Doren, Kyle Thomas, Arunas Oslapas, Darrin Seeds, Joe Clark and Michael Flaherty. Lisa is an owner of Ideal, a design shop on 1227 Cornwall Ave. in Bellingham. Michael is a professional woodworker at Flaherty Woodworking. Kyle Thomas is the lead industrial designer at Architectural Elements, Bellingham. Joe Clark is the owner of Architectural Elements. Arunas Oslapas is a Professor of Industrial Design at WWU. Darrin Seeds is the industrial designer at Transition Bikes.
