An Award-Winning Year for WWU Industrial Design [2023]

2023 was an exciting year for the ID students and faculty at Western! Here is a summary of just some of the highlights:

January

Student Merit Award Winner 2022

Kelsey Leppek was featured in the Winter 23 edition of INNOVATION, the IDSA Student Merit Award Winner 2022! WWU ID class of 2022. She is now working at the prestigious Astro Studios (PA Consulting) in San Francisco.

February

Milwaukee Tool Visit

Guest Lecture: Milwaukee Tool

Kevin White and Ian Christianson, industrial designers at Milwaukee Tool and Western ID alumni, visited from Wisconsin. They presented the Milwaukee design team and process, provided lunch, conducted internship interviews, and generously donated hand tools to the ID model making shop.

Yuanxiang Huang and Ray McVicker each win Honorable Mentions in the Global Innovation Awards 2023 for their houseware designs.

ReMade: Objects for Living

After a four year hiatus, the junior ID class had the opening night of ReMade on March 10th at Ideal. Students have reclaimed waste materials to design unique, handmade products around the theme “Objects for Living”.

IDSA Women In Design Conference

We hosted a live viewing party of this two-day conference by the IDSA Women In Design chapter for all students. “A gathering to share the tools and skills for designing more equitably, and celebrate the contributions, talents, successes, and initiatives of women, nonbinary folks, and allies in the industrial design industry.”

Guest Instructor, Carl Ledbetter

Partner Director of Design - Device Design Team at Microsoft

Thanks to Carl for being our guest instructor for the senior studio this winter! He brought his extensive experience and expertise from leading design for Xbox and HoloLens as part of the Microsoft Windows and Devices Design Team. Carl had the class design new paradigms for digital photography.

Congratulations to Asaki Nelson for winning the SIT Furniture Design Award 2023 in two categories!

Austin Porter Presentation

Special Guest Lecture: Austin Porter, CMF Design Expert

Principal Industrial Designer at Tactile visited the ID students at Western to share his process and experiences in CMF (color, material, finish) design. Austin helped to design the Xbox controller special editions utilizing customized innovative processes.

Dell King Celebration

Fluke Industrial Design Open House & Celebration of Dell King

The ID team at Fluke and the WWU alumni association organized a very special evening to celebrate Dell King and the achievements of his students during his 37-year tenure at WWU. Few at Western have left more of an indelible mark on the quality of a program and the success of its graduates as Dell has.

Outstanding Graduate: Noah Crow

Noah Crow was honored as our Outstanding ID Graduate 2023. Noah graduated in the spring with a minor in Honors Interdisciplinary Studies. Noah was actively involved in the Engineering and Design Makerspace, the Hacher Research and Writing Studio, and the WWU Dance Team.

Student Runner Up - Lifestyle Accessories Award 2023

Congratulations to Brendan Mudd for winning a Core77 Design Award for his project Nove. Nove is an opioid overdose prevention device designed for everyday carry, addressing the shortcomings of today's overdose prevention devices.

Internships

Many of our ID seniors worked at internships around the country, including Herman Miller/Knoll, Milwaukee Tool, Evolve Collaborative, Stanley, SGW Designworks, Fluke, General Electric, and more.

IDSA Student Merit Award Winner 2023

IDSA Student Merit Award Winner 2023

Brendan Mudd wins the IDSA student merit award for the western USA! Brendan is the third Western graduate to win this special award. The best ID graduates from the entire western US, from Colorado to California, Arizona to Washington, are judged by professional designers. Two years in a row, a Western ID student has won!

ID Studio Upgrades!

We purchased new Herman Miller chairs in the sophomore and junior studios, a new Epilog laser cutter, and new desk lamps for the senior studio. Thanks to Lisa Collander for the work behind the scenes.

Justin Lund

Welcome Justin Lund to WWU ID!

Justin Lund is a new professor of industrial design who strives to foster a collaborative mindset in students. Justin draws from his professional experience in product design, vehicle design, and exhibit design to introduce real-world teamwork and cross-disciplinary strategies.

Jury Duty at IDEA

Three WWU Industrial Design graduates served as jurors this year for the International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA). Congratulations, Tim Hulford, Treasure Hinds, and Ryan Diener! In addition, IDEA awards were given to project teams at Meta, Dexcom, and Milwaukee Tool, where many of our graduates are employed!

Guest Speaker: Annie Payne

Annie Payne is a Western ID alumna. She has also recently completed a master's program in material innovation at Central Saint Martins, UK, where her thesis focused on living organism design and printing textiles with live bacteria. She presented about her experience in WWUID and her career path post-graduation.

Airship Design Project

Airship Design

WWU ID seniors complete a quarter long project with TEAGUE on humanitarian airships! The students discovered unique ways an airship could serve a community after a disaster: providing clean water, communications, enhanced search capabilities, and a floating research lab.

Designer As Entrepreneur: Mike Mayberry

The Magpul Ronin MIKE MAYBERRY Co-Owner Magpul Industries Corp.  and Ronin Motorworks Mike Mayberry is an industrial designer and entrepreneur who has spent his 20-year career working in the firearms, aerospace, bicycle, and outdoor footwear industries. A jack of many trades, Mike is passionate about design and all things mechanical. Mike is co-owner of Magpul Industries Corp., which designs and manufactures components for use by elite military units, law enforcement agencies, and civilian sport shooters. He also owns Ronin Motorworks , a custom motorcycle shop based in Denver. Prior to co-founding Magpul and Ronin, Mike worked as director of product design and development at Boa Technology, helping to establish Boa as the leader in mechanical lacing systems.   Chair and ottoman design by Kelsey Leppek 2022 The industrial design class of Western Washington University 2022 exhibited their final chair design prototypes at HenryBuilt in Seattle, WA, USA. June 10.  A one night only exhibition. This set was made with bent steel tubing and fabric cushions. It was a packed crowd at the first graduate exhibition for WWU ID since 2019. Side chair by Brianna Brown 2022. Bent plywood connection detail. Brianna Brown. Bent plywood chair by Rafer Stromme. The two plywood forms are connected with a cast aluminum form. Transformable furniture design by Trinity Montgomery 2022. By changing the orientation and tying the braided rope this piece converts to various forms. Arm chair and side table by Dylan Willis 2022.
