  Chair and ottoman design by Kelsey Leppek 2022 The industrial design class of Western Washington University 2022 exhibited their final chair design prototypes at HenryBuilt in Seattle, WA, USA. June 10.  A one night only exhibition. This set was made with bent steel tubing and fabric cushions. It was a packed crowd at the first graduate exhibition for WWU ID since 2019. The GRAY Awards is an annual cross-disciplinary awards program that focuses on architecture, fashion, product design and more. Winners are given awards that are hand crafted by John Hogan, and are also honored at the awards ceremony, which of course was a virtual event this year. Aidan Borer  created his  Bottl  storage containers from recycled wine bottles and capped them with hand-turned reclaimed fir. The Industrial Design Juniors students at Western Washington University have been hard at work, designing and fabricating new houseware designs made of repurposed materials.  They were debuted at the Ideal shop in Bellingham, WA last week, and are only available there. The project was led by Prof. Arunas Oslapas. Captions were written by the staff at Ideal and photos are by Jason Morris. Each is painted with a band of chalkboard paint to label the vessel's contents. Louie Dawson's Cast Off  yo-yos are made using discarded office chair wheels. Dawson took apart each wheel  and reassembled with an inset made from scrap hardwood. His design uses the existing symmetry of the steel axle of the wheels to produce a top-knotch yoyo. Curvilinear Space Analysis by Johan Axelson I'm attempting to bring some traditional form studies from Rowena Reed Kostellow's Elements of Form into the design education at Western Washington.  These studies date back to the 1940's and the development of the original industrial design curriculum.  This is a space analysis that I did as a student of Lenny Bacich at Pratt Institute.  He was a student of Rowena's and tried to teach these very difficult form abstractions to me.  Only now that I'm teaching it do I realize what they mean and why they are so valuable.  Rectilinear Space by Larisa Schulze The forms here are done by my junior ID students.  They are not computer models, they are made with paper and wire.
