Rolling Huts by Olson Kundig Architects Kevin Kudo-King is a principal at Seattle-based Olson Kundig Architects where he has practiced since 1996. Recognized by the American Institute of Architects with the 2009 National AIA Architecture Firm Award, the practice is known for its attention to detail, integration of craft, art, and collaborative process. Kudo-King’s work includes projects found throughout the United States and in Asia including residences, institutional and commercial projects. Entrance View This is Hunter Frerich's spatial restaurant design project in my Junior ID studio course. It was a 5 week project. Nobu Concept interior Client: Nobu, Five star Japanese-American cuisine with locations in major metropolitan cities worldwide. Theme: nouveau Japanese fusion Location: Seattle downtown Objective: an elegant, beautiful space with strong Japanese and Pacific Northwest influence, comfortable, romantic. Requirements: efficient use of space, not too crowded, impressive and dynamic space Contents: kitchen, chairs, tables, sushi bar Mezzanine seating area The challenge for this project was to start with spatial form abstraction, t o think about negative space, create an organization that expands the negative volume, activates the negative volume, make it come alive. Use the movement of the axes and the tensions among the surfaces of the planes to activate the space. Kony is Very Real

In 2007 when I visited Hoima, Uganda to work with the local bicycle couriers on a new bicycle design, I met a young man, Patrick.  He worked for my mother as a handyman and groundskeeper and lived in a small home with his daughter, but he was not a local to Hoima.  He had escaped his hometown in Northern Uganda with his what was left of his family to Hoima.  He told us the story of the horror of Joseph Kony's Lord's Resistance Army and how some of his family and friends had been murdered.  So he escaped with his daughter and fled as far south as he could travel before settling in Hoima.  Mark Hardin did a video interview with him, which I still have but haven't edited.  Having heard his eye witness account myself, this LRA and their leader Joseph Kony is very real.  However, you don't need to buy a kit of stickers and posters.  I've lost touch with my contac

Carrie Ferrence - Stockbox Grocers

Carrie Ferrence Co-owner, Stockbox Grocers Carrie originally hails from rural Pennsylvania, where she was raised by a 4th-generation corner store owner. While rural life provided her with a strong foundation in social equity, hard work, and long hikes, Carrie discovered her true path by way of a diverse and meaningful career in international development, construction salvage, and education.  She is co-owner of Stockbox Grocers, a miniature grocery that is tucked inside a reclaimed shipping container and placed into a parking lot, to bring good food to more people. Carrie brings to her work more than 10 years experience in strategic planning and retail management for small business, and advocacy for non-profits.  Carrie will be presenting at  the IDSA   Western Design Dialogue Conference 2012 Seattle, May 4th and 5th.
