Northwest Design Profile: Mark Selander

Mark Selander graduated from Western Washington University in 1998 with a degree in Industrial Design. His first creative job was operating a chipmunk puppet named Rudy for a Japanese language program hosted by an outcast member of MTV’s “The Real World”.  He currently works as an industrial design consultant developing consumer products, packaging, and retail spaces for Seattle creative firms Pensar Development, Anvil Studios, Wexley School For Girls, and others. His prior work includes conceptual design on video games and entertainment titles for Microsoft, EA, Capcom, ESPN, UPN, and Nintendo. He was a core member of the team that created the ground breaking trans-media marketing campaign for Stephen Spielberg’s film “AI”, and he has helped develop scores of pitches, concepts, and campaigns that have ranged from dizzying success to being thankful that at least his Mom still loves him.

Mark will be speaking at the IDSA Western Design Dialogue Conference 2012 in Seattle, May 4th and 5th.  His presentation will be about:

"The Discipline of Flying By The Seat Of Your Pants"

We’re creative people; we use our ideas to dream, design, and invent the world around us. Sometimes however, it seems that creating the story we want to tell about ourselves is the most challenging task we face.  We can all get stuck, whether it’s a seasoned professional working a niche that has turned into a rut, a recent graduate grasping for traction in an unresponsive job market, or someone struggling with the challenges of underemployment.  What’s the answer?
Reinvention.  As a freelance designer Mark has reinvented himself time and again, to keep his work, motivation, and skills fresh. He will present several projects he has worked on, highlighting methods for creating a unique and varied career which evolves over time.

More speakers will be featured here and listed on the IDSA website. To learn more about the conference check the IDSA site page here. Save money by registering before April 20th.
